A Memorial Honor Roll for the Coal Miners that Worked the
West Newton Shaft Mine & West Newton No. 2 Mine


Following is a partial listing of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the West Newton No. 1 Shaft Mine and West Newton No. 2 Mine, West Newton, Westmoreland Co., PA.  The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured. Eye injured by a pick.  He rode out on a mine car and on alighting from the mine car he fell and the pick ran into his eye, in the West Newton Mine, Feb. 2, 1916.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by loaded mine trip, in the West Newton Shaft Mine, Sept. 19, 1904)
Burgman, Andy
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1892, West Newton Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 45, married, 7 children.);
(Andy Burgman, miner, was killed by a fall of coal and slate in the West Newton Mine on January 2, 1892.  This man had just cut through the pillar at the face of his room in order to work back on the rib.  He had worked back about eight feet, but had not taken the slate down, neither had he set any props to it for protection.  He had, just previous to the accident, fired a blast in the coal which loosened both coal and slate, but did not dislodge it.  He then went back to work under the loose slate and in front of the broken coal, with the intention of taking down a small quantity of coal to finish loading a car which was standing in his room nearly loaded, and this careless act, on his own part, cost him his life, for he had only just stepped in front of the broken coal when both the slate and coal fell upon him with fatal results.)

(Killed.  This man in company with another named H. Newman, had been cutting ice during the day and had been drinking some, on their way home Doyle walked over to the shaft, stating that he had some business there, and it was thought that he got bewildered and fell into the shaft, a distance of 80 feet; he was found the next morning by the fire boss, Robert Hall, in the West Newton Shaft Mine, Feb. 9, 1889.)

Simkos, Michael

(Killed.  Fatally injured by fall of slate, in the West Newton Shaft Mine, May 12, 1905);
(Michael Simkos, miner, was fatally injured.  He fired a shot and as he was in a hurry he commenced loading coal without setting mine posts.  The slate fell, seriously injuring him, in West Newton Shaft Mine.  He died several hours later.)
Simons, George
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, West Newton Shaft Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 45, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Almost instantly killed by a fall of coal and slate, while working pillars back to a clay vein, in the West Newton Shaft Mine, June 6, 1898.  He and his partner, John Stacy, were undermining it.  It fell suddenly on Simons, injuring him so that he died one hour afterwards.  This accident occurred in No. 2 room on No. 10 entry which did not look very like a place that was dangerous.)
