A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Waverly Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Waverly Mines & Coke Works (Smithton No. 1 Mine & Smithton No.2 Mine), Smithton, South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Kromer, Lewis

(Killed.  Almost instantly killed by a fall of small piece of slate, in the Smithton No. 2 Mine, July 1, 1898.);
(Lewis Cramer, a boy, who was working with his father, was fatally injured by a small piece of slate falling on him while in a stooping position.  If there is any blame to be attached to any one for this accident it should be the father, because he told the boy to go and clean the slate that had already fallen, without looking to see if it was safe, he being in a hurry to load night wagons, and he had not put in more than 10 bushels of coal when a small piece of slate fell on the boy, injuring him internally so that he died three hours after.  This happened in Smithton No. 2 Shaft, July 1, 1898.);

(Brother-in-law of Barney "Bald Barney" Boll, who was also killed in the Port Royal Mine explosion, June 10, 1901.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by explosion of fire damp in Port Royal No. 2 Mine, June 10,1901, during  a mine rescue attempt, both of his eyes were destroyed and he was fatally burned.  He was conscious when they brought him out of the mine.  He was placed on the train and removed to McKeesport Hospital, he died June 11, 1901, on the train before it reached McKeesport Hospital.);
(Carolina Kreuter was two months pregnant with their first child, when Fred Kreuter died.  Frederick Ludwig Jacob George John Kreuter was born January 28, 1902, he went by Fred Kreuter.);

(Killed.  Fatally injured by fall of coal, in the Waverly Mine, Sept. 5, 1905. He died Sept. 6, 1905.   He was loading out coal they had shot down.  The coal was loose from the top and he was cutting under the front of it, when it rolled over and part of it fell on him.  He died at 5 o'clock the next morning.)

(Killed.  Almost instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Smithton No. 2 Mine, Sept. 29, 1898.);
(Francisco Polo Paligge, Italian, Miner, was fatally injured by a fall of slate at Smithton No. 2 Mine, Sept. 29, 1898, in No. 2 Room No. 3, south entry.  This happened by risking his life where danger was apparent.  He was digging a piece of coal under the slate an had no posts under it;  he released it at the place where it was supported and ran the risk of his life in doing so.  He lived five hours after the accident.  This man has a wife and small family on the Ocean coming to this country.  It is a sad affair, but he was often warned before of the risks he took with slate.)

Vincenzo, Barro
(Italian Miner, Machine Loader ca.1903, Waverly Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 21, single.);
(Killed.  Barro Vincenzo, machine loader, was killed instantly. He was employed loading coal from a room, and was engaged cleaning up the slate preparatory to getting the room cut by machine.  He evidently had but very little slate remaining up, as when his body was discovered by the machine man he was lying upon his back with his head under a comparatively small piece of slate.   The slate had been broken into two pieces by the fall.)
