A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Vigilant Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Vigilant Mine, California, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..  No coal company employee records exist.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Injured.  Burned by an explosion of a five pound can of blast powder in a mine car.  The can of powder was placed on the draw bar. The motor was grounded, transmitting power through draw bar and exploding the can of Powder, in the Vigilant Mine, July 23, 1906.)

(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Vigilant Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 21, married.);
(Injured.  Burned by an explosion of a five pound can of blast powder in a mine car.  The can of powder was placed on the draw bar. The motor was grounded, transmitting power through draw bar and exploding the can of Powder, in the Vigilant Mine, July 23, 1906.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed.  He fell from the front end of his trip and was run over by the mine cars, in the Vigilant Mine, Nov. 1, 1906.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Vigilant Mine, Oct. 28, 1904.)
Grogis, Charles
(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1903, Vigilant Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Injured.  Compound fracture and dislocation of shoulder by being caught between falling coal and slate and a mine car, in the Vigilant Mine, Sept. 1, 1903.)

(Slav. Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Vigilant Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 35, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of coal and slate in the Vigilant Mine, Dec. 18, 1900.  The deceased at the time of the accident was drilling a hole for a blast; a clay vein passed nearby which was in part undermined, which fell off and caught the deceased.)
Hurra, John
(Slav. Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Vigilant Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 52, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Vigilant Mine, Nov. 15, 1900.  At the time of the accident the deceased was "blocking" his "bearing in."  The slate fell out in the form of a "pot."  On examination of the place, the inspector, was of the opinion that this accident was unavoidable.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of rock, in the Vigilant Mine, June 28, 1898.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate.  He had the rear end of the mine car under the slate and removed a post and then stood up on the bumper of the mine car to place lumps, when the slate fell and knocked him under it, in the Vigilant Mine, April 24, 1909.)
