During the construction of the Pennsylvania Turnpike PA Rt 43 August, 2008, the sealed entry of Vesta No. 6 Mine was accidentally breached.  Before the entry was re-sealed, Dave Shannon, a surveyor for the Pennsylvania Turnpike took the following photos of the Vesta No. 6 Mine entry.
The inital breach of Vesta No. 6 portal by backhoe (August, 2008) while installing new waterline associated with the new PA Turnpike Monongahela River bridge project in Denbo.

Safety personnal checking for toxis gas and inadequate oxygen levels.  It was found that the levels inside the portal were better that th outside air.  Note the sensor hanging from the ceiling.

Photo taken from just inside the entrance of the portal.  A shovel can be seen leaning on the left side of the portal as it was about 60 years ago.  Just past the shovel can be seen an opening in the wall, probably used as an escape from on-coming rail cars, also note the pipe for pumping water.

Photo taken from initial breach of the portal.  Note remains of rail ties in foreground.

The remains of a shovel in the concrete roof probably lost when the portal concrete was originally poured in early 1900's.

Another photo from deeper within the portal.  Note the water pipe to the left.  Water could be heard dripping onto water beyond this.  This elevation was probably just above the water elevation of the adjacent Monongahela River.

This building at Vesta No. 6 Mine is thought to have been the bathhouse. The Vesta No. 6 portal was just under the bucket of the backhoe.
