A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Verner Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Verner Mine, Verner No. 2 Mine, Bulger near McDonald, Smith Twp., Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Injured.  Head and shoulder burned by an explosion of gas.  They went over a "Danger" board into another room and went on top of a fall to examine the rooster coal, in the Verner Mine, July 27, 1912. With Eugene Molinari.)

(Injured.  Jaw broken by being struck by a jack pipe at the face of a room.  While raising the coal cutting machine to put a skid under it, the jack pipe slipped, in the Verner Mine, June 24, 1912.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate at th eface of a butt entry.  He was taking the slate down with a crow-bar when a piece fell off the side of the entry, in the Verner Mine, April 11, 1917.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed while setting a mine post under a piece of slate at the face of a room.   The slate fell and knocked the post out, striking him on the neck, in the VernerMine, March 19, 1910.)

(Injured.  Ribs broken by falling down mine shaft.  He was standing on a timber across the airshaft examining the ventilating fan when the timber broke, in the Verner Mine, March 23, 1917.)

(Injured.  Foot cut off by a fall of horse-back while scraping coal, in the Verner Mine, Aug. 16, 1905.)
Pivioratti, Fello
(Italian Miner Boy, Bricklayer's Helper ca.1912, Verner Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 16, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by being run over by an electric motor on the main hhaulage road.  He jumped out of an empty mine car in front of the approching motor.  Coroner's jury rendered verdict that accident was due to his own carelessness.)

(Injured.  Rib fractured by a fall of coal at the face of a room.  While attempting to get out of the way of falling coal he was knocked against a mine car standing at the face, in the Verner Mine, April 30, 1917.)

(Injured.  Back sprained by lifting a piece of slate while cleaning the road at the face of a room, in the Verner Mine, Jan. 22, 1917.)

Tizik, Mike
(Miner, ca.1943, Verner Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 51, married, wife Anna Tizik, 6 children.);
(Mike Tizik of Bulger, died Tuesday morning, January 5, 1943 of a heart attack while on his way to work at the Verner mine. He was found at 6:00 a.m. on the road near the Bulger school by fellow workers.);
(Burial was in Carnegie.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate while loading coal at the face of a room.  He was apparently not badly injured, in the Verner No 2 Mine, Aug. 4, 1916, but died August 8, 1916.)
