A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Soudan Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Soudan Mine, Van Voorhis, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(American Miner, Trip Rider ca.1916, Soudan Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 23, single.);
(Injured.  Foot and toes injured.  Run over by the wheels of the locomotive on a cross entry while attempting to board the locomotive, in the Soudan Mine, Sept. 6, 1916.)

Karpuk, Andy
(Slavonian Miner, Machine Miner ca.1917, Soudan Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 34, single.);
(Injured.  Injured in various places.  Caught between the end of a mine car and the face of coal while dropping the mine car into working place.  He was on the front end of the mine car, in the Soudan Mine, June 15, 1917.)
Kennedy, Lawdy
(American Miner, Machine Miner ca.1916, Soudan Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 43, married.);
(Injured.  Side ruptuted while removing a "T" iron rail at the face of a pillar.  The rail was partly covered by mine refuse, in the Soudan Mine, June 26, 1916.)
Koback, John
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1916, Soudan Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 26, married.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed.  Caught between the end of an empty mine car and the corner of a room pillar at the entrance to the room, where he probably went to turn the switch leading into the room.  He had just dropped a mine car into his room, and it was the custom of the miners to attend to the switches themselves when they dropped cars into rooms, in the Soudan Mine, Feb. 7, 1916.)

(Killed.  Electrocuted in a mininbg accident, in the Soudan Mine, Aug. 3, 1915.  Lived in Van Voorhis, PA.  Interred at Calvary Cemetery.  [from the Bebout & Yohe Funeral Home Records.].)

(Injured.  Collar bone fractured and shoulder injured,  Caught between empty mine cars and a coal pillar on a cross entry, in the Soudan Mine, April 26, 1916.)

(Injured.  Compound fracture of leg by a fall of slate while taking a post out from beneath slate at the face of a room, in the Soudan Mine, Sept. 15, 1917.)

(Slavonian Miner, Machine Miner ca.1917, Soudan Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 35, married.);
(Injured.  Toes crushed by a fall of coal while digging coal at the face of a room, in the Soudan Mine, Feb. 20, 1917.)

(Injured.  Knee injured.  Caught between a mine locomotive and a trip of full mine cars while standing on the running board of the locomotive.  The locomotive collided with the mine cars at an intersection point, in the Soudan Mine, July 22, 1916.)
