A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Schoenberger Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Schoenberger Mine, Baird, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1904, Schoenberger Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 32, married.);
(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of slate, in the Schoenberger Mine, Oct. 5, 1904.)
Almasia, Giovanna
(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1904, Schoenberger Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 20, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of coal and slate, in the Schoenberger Mine, Dec. 13, 1904.)
Amblim, Victor
(French Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Schoenberger Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 25, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, while loading a mine car, in the Schoenberger Mine, Aug. 23, 1905.  This accident occurred in room 13, entry 11, off 3 face.  The "Tight" was opened with about four tons of coal out of it.  After theaccident, some slate was up, under which was a post. The slate that struck Amblim fell off the front of the slate which was still up and about six inches from the post.  From the appearance of the room, the accident was caused by an oversight on the part of Amblim.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between a mine car and a post, in the Shoenberger Mine, Oct. 11, 1900.  The deceased was on his way out of the mine with a trip of loaded mine cars, and when near the entrance the front mine car left the track, the decaesed being on the front of the first mine car, tried to unhitch the mule, and before he could get out of the way the mine car caught him.)
