A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Rachel Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Rachel Mine & Coke Works, Marianna, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Finger broken.  Caught by the brake of a mine car while running car down a cross entry, in the Rachel Mine, Jan. 21, 1916.)

(Austrian Miner, Snapper ca.1916, Rachel Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured.  Crushed between the floor of a mine car and the floor of the mine.  He fell off the front end of a locomotive train, in the Rachel Mine, July 12, 1916.)
Boldochre, Peter
(Hungarian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1912, Rachel Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 34, married.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between a mine car and a coal pillar.  He was standing at his room neck when a passing mine ar jumped the track and caught him, in the Rachel Mine, Feb. 23, 1912.)

(Injured.  Left femur ruptured and fractured by a fall of coal, in the Rachel Mine, June 21, 1908.)

(Lithuanian Miner, Company Man ca,1909, Rachel Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 26, married.);
(Injured.  Leg fractured by being caught between mine cars, in the Rachel Mine, March 24, 1909.)
Butter, Mike
(Lithuanian Miner, Company Man ca.1910, Rachel Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 22, single.);
(Injured.  Leg broken.  Struck by a piece of pit rail on the main passageway, in the Rachel Mine, Nov. 18, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between a mine car and a coal pillar on one of the cross entries.  It is presumed that he was attempting to set the brakes on the trip, in the Rachel Mine, July 5, 1912.)
