A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Primrose Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Primrose Mine, Primrose, near McDonald, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Hand burned by catching hold of a bare place on a machine cable in a room.  There were 500 volts on the line, in the Primrose Mine, Jan. 27, 1917.)
Biston, John
(Hungarian Miner, Machine Miner ca.1916, Primrose Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 42, married.);
(Injured.  Head and muscles of arm injured by a fall of slate at the face of a room while shoveling out coal, in the Primrose Mine, May 15, 1916.)
Brazenek, John
(Austrian Miner Boy, Mule Driver ca.1917, Primrose Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 19, single.);
(Injured.  Leg fractured and lacerated.  He was coming out with a loaded trip of mine cars and was riding on the front end, when he slipped and fell off in front of the mine car on an entry, in the Primrose Mine, Dec. 3, 1917.)

(American Miner, Snapper ca.1917, Primrose Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 46, married.);
(Injured.  Back and hip bruised.  Caught between a mine car and a pillar on an entry, in the Primrose Mine, Feb. 26, 1917.)

(American Miner, Motorman ca.1912, Primrose Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 22, married.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by coming in contact with the electric trolley wire on the main motor road, on the main butt entry while running the electric locomotive.  He raised up to change the trolley pole and his head came in contact with the two trolley wires at the frog, charged with 500 volts, in the Primrose Mine, June 24, 1912.)

(Injured.  Three toes broken and foot otherwise injured.  While pulling a loaded mine car out of a room, his foot was caught in the frog at the room parting and the mine car ran over his foot, in the Primrose Mine, Aug. 27, 1917.)

(Belgian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1917, Primrose Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 36, married.);
(Injured.  Rib fractured.  He was setting a road post in a room.  The driver came to pull the loaded mine car out and when he turned his mule, the mule kicked the victim, in the Primrose Mine, Nov. 20, 1917.)
