A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Midland Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Midland Mines, Houston, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Arm fractured by a windlass when his glove was caught on the chain of the windlass.  Outside the Midland No. 1 Mine, Dec. 3, 1917.)

Brosky, Joe
(Russian Miner, Company Man ca.1903, Midland No. 2 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 36, married.);
(Killed.  Killed by rock from a roof shot.  He was blasting down roof in the main entry and having charged and tampered the hole, lit the squib and retreated to a place of safety, but thinking the squib had gone out he went back to the shot against the protest of the other men.  He just got back to the shot when it fired, throwing the roof upon him, in the Midland No. 2 Mine, April 10, 1903.  He lived about eight days thereafter.)

Hayley [Haley], William
(Irish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Midland No. 1 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 56, married, wife Jane Maize Hayley, 7 children.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, while in the act of setting a mine post beneath it, in the Midland No. 1 Mine, Dec. 5, 1905.);
(William Haley, aged 54 years, was killed by a fall of slate at Midland mine No. 1, Tuesday afternoon. During the afternoon Mr. Haley sent his son to the shop with some picks to be sharpened and when the boy returned he found his father lying under the slate unconscious. With the aid of another boy he removed the slate and found a pick which the unfortunate man had been using, driven into his side. Haley was removed to the surface and medical aid summoned, but he died in a short time. He was well known here and leaves a wife and seven grown children to mourn his loss.
