A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Meadow Lands Nos. 1, 2 & 3 Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Meadow Lands Nos. 1, 2 & 3 Mines, Meadow Lands, Arden, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Meadow Lands No. 1 Mine, July 19, 1905.);
(July 19, Andrew Bassic, loader, was instantly killed in Meadow Lands No. 1 Mine by a fall of slate.  It is not definitely known what he was doing at the time of the accident.  However, it is supposed he wqas examining his place, as he had fired a blast a moment or two before.)

(Killed.  Died from a blood clot on the brain caused by a compound fracture of the leg.  While shoveling coal at the face of a room the coal rolled over and slate slid from the same and caught his leg, in the Meadow Lands No. 2 Mine, April 13, 1917.)

(Injured.  Bruised about the thigh by being caught between a mine car and a rib, in the Meadow Lands No. 1 Mine, March 7, 1906.)
Spichiac, John
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Meadow Lands No. 2 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 40, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by being run over by a steam locomotive under the tipple.  Outside the Meadow Lands No. 2 Mine, March 23, 1906.);
(March 22, 1906, John Spichiac, Slavonian, miner, was instantly killed by being run over by a steam locomotive at Meadow Lands Mine No. 2.  He was on his way home asn as he was passing under the tipple he stooped down to pick up a lump a coal to take home.  The locomotive was standing above the tipple, and the alarm was given by ringing the bell that it was going to start, and the trimmer on the railroad car called to Spichiac but Spichiac did not hear the warning, the temder of the locomotive passed over him while he was still in the stooping position.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured.  While shoveling coal from the track just inside the slope mouth a mine car on the chain hoist ran back and caught his leg, in the Meadow Lands No. 3 Mine, Jan. 25, 1917.  He died February 3, 1917 from pneumonia.)
