A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Manifold Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Manifold No. 1 & No. 2 Mines, Manifold, South Strabane Twp., Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Back injured by a fall of slate in a room, in the Manifold No. 1 Mine, Feb. 22, 1904.)
Blosides, Mark
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1904, Manifold No. 2 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 28, single.);
(Injured.  Slightly injured by a fall of slate in his room, in the Manifold No. 2 Mine, April 25, 1904.  He failed to set props.)
Borich, Mike
(Horwat Miner [Croatian Miner], Coal Loader ca.1912, Manifold No. 2 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 30, single.);
(Injured.  Leg broken above the ankle and joint dislocated by a fall of slate at the face of a butt entry, in the Manifold No. 2 Mine, Nov. 14, 1912.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of slate, in the Manifold No. 1 Mine, July 7, 1905.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed.  Crushed between two railroad cars, Outside the Manifold No. 1 Mine, June 19, 1905.)

(Injured.  Left hand blown off and four fingers of the righ had had to be amputated.  He was preparing a charge of dynamite which had a cap in it, at an entry face, when it exploded, in the Manifold No. 2 Mine, May 31, 1906.)

(Slavonian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1906, Manifold No. 2 Mine, Age 22, single.);
(Injured.  Face burned and leg bruised and cut by a charge of dynamite exploding in the entry, in the Manifold Mine, May 31, 1906.)

Faulds, John
(Scotch Miner, Fire Boss ca.1905, Manifold No. 2 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 53, married, 5 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of roof, in the Manifold No. 2 Mine, May 18, 1905.);
(May 18, John Fauls, Fire boss, was fatally injured in the Manifold No. 1 Mine, and died from his injuries a few hours later.  He was making his routine inspection of the workings and in one of the rooms he observed a piece of loose rock resting upon a cross-bar.  He instructed the miner, working in the room, to take it down, but thinking he could perform the work with more safety than the miner, he knocked one of the posts out that was supporting the cross-bar, and was in the act of pulling the bar down with his hand when the rock fell upon him.);

(Killed.  Killed instantly.  Crushed between an empty hoisting cage and mine shaft timbers, in the Manifold No. 1 Mine, Sept. 28, 1905.  He tried to board the cage while it was in motion.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Manifold No. 1 Mine, May 15, 1905.);
(May 15, Augustine Senafnie, machine loader, was instantly killed in the Manifold No. 1 Mine, by a fall of slate, while, it is suposed, he was loading a car of car at the face of an entry.  He failed to post the slate, although he had been warned a few minutes before the accident occurred that it was in a dangerous condition.)
