A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Jumbo Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Jumbo Mine, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Lithuanian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1912, Jumbo Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 45, married.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall og coal at the face of a room while undermining the coal, in the Jumbo Mine, June 29, 1912.)

(Injured.  Ankle bone broken by a piece of coal falling upon him, in the Jumbo Mine, March 19, 1900.);

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between a loaded mine car and a coal pillar on the butt entry while attempting to pass his trip on the narrow side of the entry, in the Jumbo Mine, March 29, 1912.)
Cramer, Samuel
(American Miner, Machine Runner ca.1912, Jumbo Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 37, married.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by electricity, 500 volts. While loading up a short-wall coal-cutting machine at the face of a cut-though, the machine became charged, in the Jumbo Mine, Jan. 27,. 1912.)

(Injured.  Head and hand injured;  caught between a mine car and the side of an entry, in the Jumbo Mine, June 29, 1900.)

(Killed. Killed by a fall of slate in a room.  He knew the slate was unsafe, but risked his life rather than set props, in the Jumbo Mine, July 23, 1901.)

(Injured.  Leg broken;  he was struck by the dilly trip, in the Jumbo Mine, Aug. 10, 1900.)
Hicks, James
(American Miner, Machine Runner ca.1903, Jumbo Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 36, married, 2 children.);
(Killed.  Killed by mine cars in the  Jumbo mine.  He was walking on the dilly road and was overtaken by the trip.  He failed to make use of the escape holes, in the Jumbo Mine, Jan. 6, 1903.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of roof, in the Jumbo Mine, Aug. 23, 1905.);
(August 23, William Kyle, coal loader, was killed at 8 A.M. by a fall of roof in No. 44 room off No. 49 entry, in the Jumbo mine.  Kyle and Robert Steveson were working together.  They had fired their tight shot and started to load the mine car when a piece of roof coal between a spar and a free slip running to a point, fell and struck Kyle.)

(Injured.  Injured about the head and body.  Struck by mine cars on the dilly road, in the Jumbo Mine, July 24, 1905.)
Williams, J. Frank
(American Miner, Mine Foreman ca.1910, Jumbo Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 38, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Right leg fractured and head injured.  A small piece of roof fell on his leg and threw him against a rib of the side track.  He struck the rib with his head with such force that a clot of blood formed on his brain, in the Jumbo Mine, June 6, 1910.  He died in the hospital a few hours afterward.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being struck on the stomach by a post that he was knocking up at the face of a room, in the Jumbo Mine, Dec. 7, 1912.  He died the next day.)
