A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Hazel Kirk Mines

Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Hazel Kirk Mines, Monongahela, Hazel Kirk, Carroll Twp., Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Prosecuted for Violation of the Mining Laws:  December 2, 1915 - Information was made against William Bird, Superintendent Hazel Kirk No. 1 Mine, Pittsburgh Westmoreland Coal Company.  Charge: Failure to install safety gates at landing of shaft of mine.  After much negotiation, resulting finally in the installation of safety gates and appliances, a settlement was had. Costs were paid by the defendant.  On March 3, 1916, nol. pros. was formally entered by the District Attorney with leave of court.)

Shupe was held for court and after some delay, the matrer was brought before the Grand Jury, who returned a true bill.  The trial being conducted, the verdict was one onf not guilty, but county should pay the costs.);
