A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Hazel Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Hazel Mine, East Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Injured.  Injured by a mine car.  He coupled the haulage rope to the mine car and without even giving the signal to lower the mine car down the slope pushed it into the slope and jumped on.  The mine car struck cars at the bottom with such violence that he was thrown across the main passageway and severely injured, in the Hazel Mine, Jan. 8, 1904.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being run over by mine cars, in the Hazel Mine, Sept. 12, 1905.);
(September 12, Thomas Keating was seriously injured in the Hazel mine, near the bottom of slope at No.1 entry switch.  In attempting to step on the front end of loaded mine cars, he slipped and fell under them and was dragged 25 yards.  He was taken to the hospital, where he died the same day.)

(September 3, James Oston, was instantly killed by a fall of roof in the Hazel Mine.  The accident occurred in No. 5, parting off No. 2 entry, main, while taking down roof.  He throught he had taken down all  the loose rock and began to clean up the rock that had been taken down, when a piece of rock fell out of the free slip in a V shape, nine feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet thick and struck him.)
