From the Report of the Department of Mines, 1903.

Francis Mine.
A slope opening.  The company begun shipping coal in the month of August, 1903.  The mine is being operated day and night so as to develop the property as quickly as possible to obtain a large production.  The ventilation is produced by a temporary furnace and steam jet, but both the ventilation and drainage were found somewhat defective.  Arrangements are being made to introduce a ventilating fan.  This mine is situated one mile west of Burgettstown, Washington county.

(From the "McDonald Record-Outlook.")
One Dead, Three Injured in Powder Explosion.  One child is dead, two others and their mother are in the Washington hospital, and their home is a wreck, the result of an explosion which occurred at 9:15 this Thursday morning in their dwelling at Francis Mine, near Burgettstown. The dead child, a boy about 7, the injured mother, Mrs. Francis Huggins, and two injured children, a girl, 11, and a boy 3, were in the house when the accident occurred.  The father, Francis Huggins, was at work in the mine at the time. He has been employed at Francis mine the past ten years.  It is surmised that the explosion was caused by setting off a quantity of blasting powder, such as is used in coal mining.  How it occurred is not definitely known. Not one tile of the foundation was left upon another, so complete was the destruction caused by the explosion.
