A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Erie Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Erie Mine, Burgettstown, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Hand bruised.  Caught between electric motors while making a coupling on the main entry, in the Erie Mine, Nov. 1, 1916.)

(American Miner, Motorman ca.1916, Erie Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 33, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed.  Caught between an electric motor and roof on the main haulage road, in the Erie Mine, Mar. 10, 1916.)

(American Miner, Motorman ca.1916, Erie Mine, Age 22, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed.  Caught between a electric motor and an entry pillar on a butt entry, in the Erie Mine, Feb. 20, 1916.)

(Injured.  Hip dislocated.  Caught between an electric motor and a trap door on a butt entry, in the Eria Mine, Feb. 12, 1916.)

Jacobs, Frank
(American Miner, Brakeman ca.1912, Erie No. 1 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 21, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between a mine car and a coal pillar near the bottomof the slope.  He was riding on the rear end of the electric motor preparing to pull the hitch pin.  In making a swing into the bottom of the slope he jumped backwards and fel, with his face alongside of the T-rail and the wheel of the first car ran over his head, in the Erie No. 1 Mine, Nov. 5, 1912.  Jury rendered verdict of accidental death from unknown causes.)

(American Miner, Machine Miner ca.1916, Erie Mine, Age 44, married.);
(Injured.  Ankle fractured.  While loading stock car with a slack scoop, it turned over and caught his ankle.  Outside the Erie Mine, April 7, 1916.)

(Austrian Miner, Machine Miner ca.1916, Erie Mine, Age 32, married.);
(Injured.  Hand bruised and finger cut off.  Caught between a mine car and the mine roof while pushing the mine car at the face of a room, in the Erie Mine, Sept. 5, 1916.)

(Injured.  Back sprained while assisting to replace a derailed mine car in a room, in the Erie Mine, Jan. 6, 1916.)

Mozeck, Peter
(Austrian Miner, Laborer ca.1917, Erie Mine, Age 41, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Killed by being caught in the driving gear of the picking table on the tipple while oiling the machinery.  A machinist had charge of all outside machinery and other persons were strictly forbidden to interfere with the machinery.  Outside the Erie Mine, Feb. 13, 1917.)

(Injured.  Head and face cut by a fall of coal at the face of a pillar while drawing posts to make a fall, in the erie Mine, Mar. 15, 1916.)

(American Miner Boy, ca.1929, Erie Mine, Age 14.);
(Later left the Erie Mine to work at American Zinc in Langeloth, PA, then Climax Molybdenum Company in the same town., Langeloth, PA.)

(Injured.  Leg fractured and bruised.  Caught between loaded mine cars at a room off the butt entry, in the Erie Mine, April 17, 1916.)
