A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Ellsworth Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Ellsworth Mines, Ellsworth, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Miner, Tipple Worker, Ellsworth Mines, Washington Co., PA.  Frank DiRito worked outside the mine and filled the coal cars at the tipple at shaft number two.  He rode the cars down to the tipple for loading and then rode them down track loaded as they waited for the next freight to bring empty cars back to the three mines in the area.);

(Killed. Gaitano DiRito was killed in ca.1913 by a roof collapse, in the Ellsworth Mines. He opted for the short cut of chipping the coal off the walls and ceiling leaving the slate to make more money since they were only paid for the coal they sent out and not the slate. One day the roof came down on him and he left a widow with 5 boys.);

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  Palo Yuszko and George Micula, prosecuted for passing through a door and not properly closing same in the Ellsworth Mine No. 1.  Yuszko, after being arrested, escaped from the officer.  In the case of Micula, the grand jury ignored the bill and placed the costs on the county.  There were mitigating circumstances connected with this case which no doubt had some bearing on the finding of the grand jury.)
