A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Eclipse Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Eclipse Mines, Elco, near Roscoe, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being crushed on an empty mine car while on his way out of the mine.  The car was struck by a runaway motor train running in the same direction in which the victims' car was traveling, in the Eclipse Mine, Nov. 16, 1917.)

Buesko, John
(Slavonian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1913, Eclipse Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 22, single.);
(Injured.  Face and hand burned by premature blast at the face of an entry before he could get away, in the Eclipse Mine, Feb. 22, 1913.)
Bumberger, Isaac
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, Eclipse River Mine, Washington Co., PA.);
(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  John Kelly and Isaac Bumberger Eclipse River Mine, were charged with causing the death of James H. Currie, who was killed by flying coal which was thrown through a rib froma blast fired by the above named persons.  Immediately preceding the firing of the shot, Bumberger stood on the road opposite a cut-through between the room occupied by Currie and and the one occupied by Kelley and Bumberger, and cried "fire," and without waiting for an answer, the shot was fired, resulting as stated above, on Jan. 26, 1898.  The case was dismissed.)

Craig, James
(Miner, Fire Boss ca.1898, Eclipse Mine, Washington Co., PA.);
(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws, 1898:  James Craig, Fire Boss of Eclipse Mine, was charged with making false reports in the fire boss report book and failing to examine the mine as required by the act of May 15, 1893, relating to Bituminous coal mines.  Case compromised on payment of costs of $17.30.)
Currie, James H.
(American Miner, Coal Loader after Machine ca.1898, Eclipse River Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 22, single.);
(Killed.  Killed by coal flying from a shot which blew through a rib, in the Eclipse River Mine, Jan. 26, 1898.  Deceased, with his brother Murt, worked together in room 35, entry 18.  In room 34 John Kelly and Isaac Bumberger were employed, and just previous to the accident had put in a hole for the purpose of firing a butt shot.  When about ready to fire, Bumberger went to the cut through between the two rooms, which was about 30 feet from the face, and called "fire" twice in quick succession. Without waiting for an answer, Kelly fired the shot, the result being the death of Currie.);

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a mine car.  He was driving a mule with one loaded mine car on a nearly level track 150 feet inside of the pit mouth and was found dead under the mine car on the entry, in the Eclipse Mine, Nov. 22, 1909.  It appears that he was riding on the front end of the car and fell under the car.)
