A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Dunkirk Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Dunkirk Mine, near Monongahela, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Superintendent ca.1916, of the Dunkirk Mine, Washington Co., PA, for Dunkirk Gas Coal Company.);
(Prosecuted for Violation of Mining Laws:  Dec.16, 1916.  -  Information was made against James Maize, superintendent, Dunkirk mine, Dunkirk Gas Coal Company.  Charge:  Shooting and permitting shots to be fired without first wetting down the  dust for at least 80 feet. After much negatiation, the case was finally disposed of by a settlement, upon written agreement binding upon the company requiring a more extended use of safety lamps, exclusive use of shot firers and safety powder, and the wetting down and loading out the dust from the entires.  Costs paid by defendant.  Nol. pros. entered by District Attorney by leave of Court May 25, 1916.)

(Paul Skinko, a miner, employed at the Dunkirk Mine, electrocuted July 26, 1904, by coming in contact with electric trolley wire, while on his way out of the mine. From evidence produced, it seems that the deceased had no business at the place where accident occurred.)
