A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Diamond Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Diamond Mine, West Brownsville, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..  No coal company employee records exist.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(English Miner, Electrician ca.1910, Diamond Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 29, married, 5 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a boiler explosion Sunday morning.  The cause as determined by the coroner's jury was, either too low water in the boiler or too high steam pressure, and Earl Bevard, the boiler house fireman on duty, was the only person who know the real cause.  Outside the Diamond Mine, May 15, 1910.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of late near the face of a room.  He was loading a mine car of coal close to the left side of the rib in his room, which was well posted, but owing to the wet roof and a slip in the slate between the post and the rib, the slate fell, in the Diamond Mine, March 5, 1909.  He died a few minutes after he was removed from under the slate.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by  a mine car at the entrance to his room.  While assisting to lift a mine car onto the track the mule that was hitched to the mine car gave a pull and his leg was broken, in the Diamond Mine, May 2, 1910.  Gangrene developed and his leg was amputated May 20, and he died the same day.)
