A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Crescent Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Crescent Mine, Crescent Heights, California, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..  No coal company employee records exist.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between a mine car and the rib in his room.  He took the rope from the crab motor into his room and attached it to the mine car and before he got out of the way he told the motorman to pull the mine car.  He then stepped to the tight side and called to the motorman to stop, which the motorman did, but it was too late, in the Crescent Mine, Jan. 23, 1912.  Died three days later.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between a mine car abd a rib at the entrance to a butt entry.  The motorman was puching a slate car into this entry.  The snapper was between this and another mine car.  He incoupled the slate car and stepped out from between them on the tight side of the entry while the mine car was in motion, in the Crescent Mine, Feb. 27, 1912.)

(Joseph was born in Lubomierz, Poland on May 19, 1888, immigrated to America on March 16, 1907 from Niedzwiedz, Poland. He resided at House 285, Crescent Heights and was employed at the Crescent Mine for 16 years. His wife Maggie predeceased him in 1944. He left behind seven sons: Joseph Jr., John, Edward, William, Steve, Frank and George and four daughters: Wanda, Victoria, Stella and Irene.)

(John Zegar, miner, was instantly killed on July 25, by a fall of slate, while loading a mine car in the Crescent Mine.  Accident due to carelessness on the part of the deceased and his partner, John Crowl.)
