A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Champion Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Champion Mine, Elco, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Champion Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 57, married.);
(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of slate, in the Champion Mine, Nov. 3, 1906.)

Barnes, Mr.
(Miner, ca.1893, Champion Mine, Washington Co., PA.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Champion Mine, July, 1893.);
(Dr. Laross, of this place and Dr. Cullinam, of Willow Grove, yesterday held a post mortem examination of the body of a man named Barnes, who was hurt a few days ago at Champion mines by a fall of slate, the object being to determine the immediate cause of death. The found that peritonitis caused death, brought on by the injuries gotten in the mine.  [from the "McDonald Outlook," McDonald, PA, July, 1893.].)

(Superintendent, ca.1900, ca.1903, ca.1904, ca.1905, of the Champion Mine, Washington Co., PA, for Monongahela River Consolidated Coal & Coke Company, Pittsburg, PA.)

Rahnke, Herman
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1909, Champion Mine, Age 57, married, 7 children.);
(Killed. Instantly killed at about eight o'clock Wednesday Morning in the Champion Mine, by a fall of slate. The unfortunate man was bailing water at the time the accident occured, and his son-in-law Otto Schultz, was working with him and we are told was in the act of setting a post to make the slate more secure, when a "pot" of the treacherous stuff fell out without the slightest warning, striking both men, killing Rahnke and injuring Schultz, in the Champion Mine, Mar. 3, 1909.);
(Rahnke Herman lived at Long Branch.);
(Interment at Mt. Tabor Cemetery.);

(Injured.  Bruised about the face, left arm and leg by a fall of coal and slate, in the Champion Mine, July 5, 1904.)
Schultz, Otto
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1909, Champion Mine, married.);
(Injured.  Broken and badly crushed ankle and was otherwise injured, he was bailing water at the time the accident occured, and his father-in-law Herman Rahnke, was working with him and we are told was in the act of setting a post to make the slate more secure, when a "pot" of the treacherous stuff fell out without the slightest warning, striking both men, killing Rahnke and injuring Schultz, in the Champion Mine, Mar. 3, 1909.);
(Son-in-law of Herman Rahnke.)

(Injured.  Compound fracture of leg.  He was caught in the tail chain of a horse which he was driving on the haulage road, in the Champion Mine, Dec. 18, 1917.)
