A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Brier Hill Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Brier Hill Mine, McDonald, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed. Fatally injured by being run over by the dilly trip, in the Brier Hill Mine, Aug. 16, 1892.  Died the next day.)

Deliant, Pierre "Peter"
(Belgian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1892, Brier Hill Mine, Washington Co., PA, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Peter Deliant, miner, was killed by a fall of slate in the Brier Hill Mine on April 14, 1892.  This man's working place was found to be well timbered and the slate which fell upon him broke from over the prop which was set under it.  The occurrence was purely accidental.);
(Pierre Deliant, a Belgian miner, was killed by a fall of slate at Brier Hill on Thursday morning. He leaves a wife and four children, the youngest of which is nine years old. They won a house and lot on Belgian Hill. Friday afternoon the remains were buried at Arlington. Deceased was well known as an honest, hard working man, struggling to make a home for his family in the country of his adoption. He was a regular attendant at the U. P. Church. (Killed.   Fatally injured by a fall of roof, in the Brier Hill Mine, Nov. 23, 1905.);
(November 3, Louis Hainout was seriously injured by a fall of roof in No. 26 room, off No. 20 entry in the Brier Hill Mine.  He died the following day.)
