A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Banner Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Banner Mine, Shire Oaks, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Leg broken by a mine car.  Outside the Banner Mine, Nov. 15, 1904.)

(Hungarian Miner, Machine Loader ca.1903, Banner Mine,Washington Co., PA, Age 46, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Banner Mine, Oct. 9, 1903.);
(Mike Caswell, loader, was instantly killed in the Banner Mine, October 9, by a fall of slate while knocking coal.  Upon examination I found that deceased had been somewhat negligent as the place showed no evidence of any posts having been set under the slate.)

(Injured.  Face and breast injured by a shot, in the Banner Mine, Aug. 27, 1900.)

(Hungarian Miner, Scraper ca.1907, Banner Mine,Washington Co., PA, Age 20, married.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a mining machine at the face of an entry while setting the front jack, in the Banner Mine, Oct. 18, 1907.  The machine runner was setting the hind jack, preparing to cut the last run, when the machine started in some manner and cut off the scraper's foot.  He died from the shock nine hours later.)
