A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Atlas Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Atlas Mine, Atlasburg, Smith Twp., Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Passed his examination for Mine Foreman, First Grade, ca.1917.  Received his certificate, ca.1917.)

(Injured.  Breast bone and ribs badly crushed.  Caught between a mine car and a rib on an entry, in the Atlas Mine, Oct. 15, 1917.)
Burdus, Andy
(Lithuanian Miner, Snapper ca.1916, Atlas Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured.  Caught between a mine car and a trap door post on No. 3 Southwest butt entry, in the Atlas Mine, Aug. 5, 1916.)
Byrne, J. S.
(American Miner, Sinker ca.1912, Atlas No. 2 Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 39, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.   Instantly killed by falling rock from the side of the mine shaft that was being sunk.  The shift boss had examined the side of the shaft and reported it safe, in the Atlas No. 2 Mine, March 18, 1912.  Coroner's jury rendered verdict of accisentla death and exonerated the company from all blame.)

(Injured.  Pelvis and hip bruised.  Caught between loaded and empty mine cars on an entry, in the Atlas Mine, Jan. 18, 1917.)

(Injured.  Chest Bruised.  Caught between a mine car and a pillar on an entry, in the Atlas Mine, March 3, 1917.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between loaded mine cars on the butt entry.  He was gathering a loaded trip and was coupling thelast mine car onto the trip on the "Fly."  He was reachng in between the cars when the last car turned into the room and being on the inside of the curve he was caught between the cars when they came together, in the Atlas Mine, Oct. 27, 1917.  Died one hour later.)
