A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Allison Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Allison Mine, Houston, Washington Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Leg crushed by a fall of roof at the face of a room, in the Allison Mine, Oct. 31, 1912.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between mine cars on a face entry, in the Allison Mine, Oct. 24, 1912.)

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate;  he was standing on a room parting for the trip of mine cars to pass, when the slate fell upon him, causing instant death, in the Allison Mine, May 2, 1900.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a punching mining machine.  He was undermining the coal when the machine rebounded striking him in the lower part of the abdomen, in the Allison Mine, June 5, 1904.)

(Italian Miner, Machine Scraper ca.1917, Allison Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 29, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured.  His leg was caught and mangled by the bits of the chain of the mining machine at the face of a room.  The machine was started before the jacks were sufficiently tight and consequently swerved, in the Allison Mine, Feb. 28, 1917.  He died March 6, 1917.)

(Austrian Miner, Machine Miner ca.1917, Allison Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 39, married.);
(Injured.  Great toe crushed by a machine truck running on it in a room, in the Allison Mine, Nov. 5, 1917.)

(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Allison Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 55, married.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate in his room;  the slate that fell was encircled by a free slip which could not be seen, in the Allison Mine, July 15, 1901.)
McCoy, Frank
(American Miner, Mule Driver ca.1912, Allison Mine, Washington Co., PA, Age 35, married.);
(Injured.  Back broken by being run over by a truck on the outside of the pit mouth, outside the Allison Mine, Nov. 16, 1912.  He was in the act of throwing coal off the truck when he fell in front of it.)
