St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church
The Village of Trauger in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, PA,  features one architecturally impressive historic building, the St. Mary's Byzantine "Greek" Catholic Church.  Standing on the south side of PA Rt. 981, this large brick building was built in 1914 in the Spanish Renaissance style. It is in excellent condition and is still in daily use.

HISTORY:
St. Mary's Byzantine "Greek" Catholic Church, Trauger, PA
At the turn of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, thousands of immigrants from the central European countries of Austria-Hungary Empire, the Carpatho-Rusyn people, came to the coal fields of western Pennsylvania. These immigrants brought with them their traditions, customs, and their Catholic faith of the Greek (Byzantine) Rite that was dear to them.  St. Mary's Greek Catholic Church was founded January 1, 1894 under the leadership of Rev. Staphen Dzubay. The first place of worship was in a hall in Calumet, PA.  The actual construction of a church building did not begin until 1897 and the small frame building was completed the same year.  As the membership in parish continued to grow the need for a larger church building was felt.  The cornerstone for the present brick church building was laid on August 16, 1914.
St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church sixty-fifth anniversary and solomn re-dedication was celebrated April 16, 1961.  The Rev. Andrew Bachkovski was the Administrator at that time.
St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Trauger, PA celebrated its centennial in 1994.
