Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Standard Shaft Mines, Standard Shaft, Mt. Pleasant Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(March 18, Standard Shaft Mine, Joseph Clemonte, miner, was instantly killed.  He was drawing a rib and making a cut-through.  He went back to get some coal squeezed off of back stump.  The roof fell and struck him on the back of the head knocking him forward.  When picked up he was dead.)

(Prosecuted for Violation of the Mining Laws: Nov. 29, 1909, information was made against Tony Cost, charged with carrying matches into the Standard Shaft Mine of H.C. Frick Coke Company.  He was tried before a jury, who returned a verdict of guilty.  The Court sentenced him to pay a fine of five dollars and costs.)

(Agust 31, 1905, He was riding over the coke ovens and in stepping off a larry car, the brake beam caught his foot and he was thrown in front of the train and seriously injured, at Standartd Shaft Mine.  He died September 5, 1905.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars, in the Standard Shaft Mine, Jan. 29, 1901.  The victim was descending the heading with a trip of cars and upon nearing a trap door, ran ahead and opened the door and in attempting to get on the front car he fell when the cars ran upon him, inflicting injuries that caused death five hours later.)

(Michael Kossack, horse driver, was fatally injured.  He was coming out of the heading with two loaded mine cars, riding upon the front end. The horses faltered, and Kossack thinking that he was about to be caught attempted to jump off upon the narrow side, and was caught between the mine cars and the coal pillar.)

(Thomas Meagher, horse driver, was fatally injured.  He was waiting upon the side track for the arrival of the dilly trip of empty mine cars.   When the trip arrived it was running at a much higher speed than usual, and his horse being upon the track, he attempted to get it out of the way, when he was caught by the mine cars.  He died 58 days later.)

(Andrew Vodack and James Sidehamer were killed instantly.  They were employed drawing stumps and a chain pillar, and were engaged upon the last stump near the mouth of the entry, and had a large space withdrawn, which evidently was not properly posted.  While they were engaged loading a mine car, the upper roof, which had been working for some time, broke suddenly and caught them.  It required a force of workmen several hours to recover the bodies.)

(Prosecuted for Violation of Mining Laws:  Dec. 7, 1909, information was made against Spanislaw Smider, charged with taking matches into the Standard Shaft Mine of the H.C. Frick Coke Company.  Defendant entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of one dollar and be confined in jail for a period of two months and ten days.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars, in the Standard Shaft Mine, Jan. 14, 1901.  The victim was employed with his father who sent him out in the dark to get his safety lamp lighted, and on his way down the heading, his foot became fast between a culvert plank and the track rail, the driver was descending the heading with a trip of loaded mine cars and did not hear the boy calling until so near that he was unable to stop unitl the wheels had passed over his foot.  The accident was not considered very serious at the time, but blood poisoning resulted, causing death nine days later.)

(Killed.   Killed instantly by fall of a horseback, in Standard Shaft Mine, Aug. 7, 1905.)
(He and another man were drawing a rib, 18 feet thick.  They had two good rows of posts, 8 feet from the face.  At 1:30 a.m., the room was inspected by the fire-boss Frank Birdy, and was considered safe and in good condition. In digging the men released the edge of a horse-back.  It fell without warning and killed John Vilsack instantly, in Standard Shaft Mine, 1905.)
Vodack, Andrew

(Killed.   Killed instantly by falling roof, in Standard Shaft Mine, April 1, 1903.);
(Andrew Vodack and James Sidehamer were killed instantly.  They were employed drawing stumps and a chain pillar, and were engaged upon the last stump near the mouth of the entry, and had a large space withdrawn, which evidently was not properly posted.  While they were engaged loading a mine car, the upper roof, which had been working for some time, broke suddenly and caught them.  It required a force of workmen several hours to recover the bodies.)
