A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Standard Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Standard Mines & Coke Works, Standard,  Mt. Pleasant Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(March 18, 1905, Standard Shaft Mine, Joseph Clemonte, miner, was instantly killed.  He was drawing a rib and making a cut-through.  He went back to get some coal squeezed off of back stump.  The roof fell and struck him on the back of the head knocking him forward.  When he was picked up he was dead.)

Ignace Deus is a fugitive from justice.)

(December 26, 1905, Standard Slope Mine, William Firmstone, driver was fatally injured.  He was coming down No. 4 Butt with five full mine wagons.  He was walking between the mine wagons and rib loosening the brakes, when a broken flange on the front wheel of the front mine wagon caused it to jump the track and throw the second mine wagon against the rib, catching him between the mine wagon and the rib.  At the place of the accident, the distance between the rail and the rib is 2 feet 8 inches and the width of the entry is 9 feet 5 inches.)

(Agust 31, 1905, He was riding over the coke ovens and in stepping off a larry car, the brake beam caught his foot and he was thrown in front of the train and seriously injured, at Standartd Shaft Mine.  He died September 5, 1905.)

(Prosecuted for Violation of Mining Laws: July, 1910, Information was made against Patrick Flynn, Frank Kantorick, Matthew Kantorick, James Rogers and John Rogers, Fire Bosses at Standard No. 2 Mine of the H.C. Frick Coke Company, for neglecting to perform their duties as fire bosses, in that they entered said mine after the ventilating fan had been stopped and proceeded to examine the working places therein, without seeing that the air-current was traveling in its proper course and in the proper volumne, and neglected to notify the mine foreman of the defect forthwith.  The case was not pressed, on payment of the costs by the defendants.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars, in the Standard Shaft Mine, Jan. 29, 1901.  The victim was descending the heading with a trip of cars and upon nearing a trap door, ran ahead and opened the door and in attempting to get on the front car he fell when the cars ran upon him, inflicting injuries that caused death five hours later.)
