A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Pen-Mar Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Pen-Mar Mines, Macdonaldton, Brothers Valley Twp., Somerset Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Pen Mar Mine, Somerset Co., PA, Age 30, married.);
(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of coal, in the Pen Mar Mine, Aug. 20, 1901.)

(Injured.  Arm fractured by jumping from a runaway trip of mine cars, in the Pen Mar No. 3 Mine, July 10, 1905.  Arm had to be amputated.)
Bobosky, Peter
(Austrian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1912, Pen Mar No. 2 Mine, Somerset Co., PA, Age 31, single.);
(Injured.  Finger cut off by being caught in a gear wheel of the haulage engine, in the Pen Mar No. 2 Mine, July 18, 1912.)
Brown, Wm. M.
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Pen Mar Mine, Somerset Co., PA, Age 54, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Pen Mar Mine, Dec. 18, 1901.  He had fired a shot in the coal and seeing that the roof was unsafe to work under, he commenced to prepare a place for posts, when it fell on him.)
