A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Merchants' Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Merchants'  Mines, Elk Lick, Somerset Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Injured by a fall of slate, in the Merchants No. 3 Mine, July 16, 1901.)

(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Merchants No. 2 Mine, Age 28, single.);
(Injured.  Leg and arm fractured by a fall of roof coal, in the Merchants No. 2 Mine, Feb. 2, 1905.)

(Austrian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Merchants No. 2 Mine, Age 27, married.);
(Injured.  Arm fractured.  Squeezed between a horse and a post, in the Merchants No. 2 Mine, Aug. 19, 1905.)

Ginwaski, John
(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Merchants No. 2 Mine, Age 36, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of roof coal and bone coal while mining coal in his working place, in the Merchants No.2 Mine, Aug. 26, 1905.  He cut into a slip that cut the roof coal, thereby cutting away the support to that portion of the roof.)

(Austrian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Merchant Coal Company, No. 2 Mine, Age 58, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof coal, in the Merchants No. 2 Mine, Sept. 16, 1901.  The accident happened when he had his wagon nearly filled, when a piece of coal fell on him.)
