A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Eureka Mines, Somerset Co., PA


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Eureka Mines, Windber, Paint Twp., Somerset Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Killed by a mine car striking him on the stomach. He was working in a heading which was going to the dip heavily, and while the motor was pulling cars out he was instructed by his foreman to get into the cross-cut until cars were pulled over the summit, but this time at least he did not, and a coupling broke and let a car down, which struck the one he was loading, and it struck him on the stomach and killed him, in the Eureka No. 31 Mine, Nov. 16, 1899.).

(Killed.  He was going out the mine in the evening, and met an empty trip coming in. Instead of getting into man hole until trip passed he stepped on to loaded trip track and the motor and part of trip ran over him; his partner escaped without injury, in the Eureka No. 30 Mine, Dec. 7, 1903.);
(Killed.  Joe Amonski, Pole who came to country one month ago was run down by mine motor in Eureka No. 30 Mine.  Wednesday,  He avoided one motor and struck by another. Aged 35. Buried in St. John's. [From the "Windber Journal," Windber, PA, Dec. 17, 1903.].);
(Joe Arnonski, A Pole killed in Eureka No. 30 Mine on Monday. Stepped out of way of one motor and run down by another. Spragger had tried to warn him but failed. Undertaker Meek and burial in Roman Catholic cemetery. "The deceased came to America only a month ago and lived in house No. 14 at mine 30. Berkey, American, Scraper;  John Shattack, Slavonian, loader, and Steve Mizurich, Slavonian, loader, Eureka No. 33 Mine, were killed almost instantly by a large fall of rock in a room neck that had just been turned off the heading, not having fully widened out yet.  There was from twelve to eighteeninched of the roof down that was left to the left, and the two loaders were cleaning up the place to drop this rock, when the scraper came into see when they wanted their place cut.  Juts then the whole mass fell and caught the three men under it.)

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  Sept., 1912.  Information was made against Joseph Tozac and Anthony Salitoni, miners, Eureka No. 35 Upper Mine of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, charging them with failing to carry out and disobeying the instructions of the Mine Foreman, thereby contributing to the cause of the death of one of their partners.  They entered a plea of guilty on the same day.  The court sentenced them to pay the cost and a fine of $25.00 each.)
