A Memorial Honor Roll for the Coal Miners that Worked the Seaboard Mine


Following is a partial listing of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Seaboard Mine, Stanton St., Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., PA.  The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Leg fractured between knee and ankle.  Struck by a piece of slate that he was taking down at the face of a room, in the Seaboard Mine, March 22, 1916.)

Holsing, John K.
(American Miner, Machinist ca.1907, Seaboard Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 53, married.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a balance weight of the cage hoisting apparatus, in the Seaboard Mine, March 15, 1907.);
(March 15, John K. Holsing, American, Machinist, was so seriously injured in the Seaboard Mine that death resulted the following day.  He was engaged packing a pump in the air chamber of the shaft.  He stepped over a steam line to obtain more room and when doing so the balance weight of the cage came down the shaft and caught him.  He had been warned of the danger, but forgot.  He was an ewxperienced man and understood his work well, hgav9ng been employed by the company for years.)

(Injured.  Shoulder dislocated and ribs broken by falling from a ladder while painting a trestle.  Outside the Seaboard Mine, Sept. 20, 1907.)

Stitzer, Otto
(German Miner, Pick Miner ca.1907, Seaboard Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 44, married, 5 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by falling into the mine shaft, at the Seaboard Mine, Feb. 8, 1907.);
(February 8, Otto Stitzer, German, Miner, was instantly killed about 7 o'clock A,M, by falling into the Seaboard Shaft Mine.  John S. Taylor, the mine foreman, stated that he had sent all the men down the shaft who were there and then went to the office to make out a report.  It was understood by all that no one was to get on the cage until he had notified either the mine foreman or the engineer, but contrary to orders it is supposed Stitzer came to the shaft thinking the cage was at the landing, opened the gate and stepped in.  An electric light was nearby and he should have seen the danger.  Nicholas Drystadt and his brother were at the bottom of the shaft when he fell.  An inquest was held and the verdict was that death was due to his own negligence.)
