A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Penn Manor Shaft Mine (Penn Manor No. 1 Mine)


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Penn Manor Shaft Mine (Penn Manor No. 1 Mine), Manor, Penn Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof at the face of a pillar on the butt entry while drawing mine posts, in the Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, Feb. 18, 1910.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by a fall of slate, in the Penn Manor Mine, Nov. 19, 1900.)
Bishop, Martin, Jr.
(American Miner Boy, Outside Laborer ca.1903, Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 13, single.);
(Injured.  Leg crushed; run over by a railroad car underneath the tipple, outside the Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Dec. 3, 1903.)
Bishop, Martin, Sr.
(American Miner, Mule Driver ca.1903, Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 40, married, 4 children.);
(Killed. Almost instantly killed by a fall of roof coal and slate, in the Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Sept. 1, 1903.  He had hitched his mule to the wagon and had gone behind for the purpose of slewing the wagon, when it came to a little twist in the track about 15 feet distant in a room where they were drawing the rib back.  The wagon when it got to this point climbed the rail and knocked a post out from under some bad top, which came down on him.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof rock while working in his room on pillars.  The place was well posted but it broke over the postd without warning, in the Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Oct. 12, 1905.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a premature blast, in the Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Aug. 8, 1906.  Died August 11, 1906.)

(Injured.  Ruptured by lifting a water car on to the track, in the Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, Dec. 4, 1916.)

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws: August 7, 1912.  John Drager, mining machine operator, Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, Pittsburgh-Westmoreland Coal Company.  Charge:  Continuing to use a defective trailing cable on his mining machine.  Aug. 26, plead guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of $5.00 and the costs.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Penn Manor Shaft Mine, Nov. 9, 1903.  Died in the Westmoreland Hospital Nov. 25, 1903.  His leg was fractured at the ankle by a fall of slate while working in his room on pillar work.  He had his place posted well, but there was an unseen slip in the slate.  He was taken to the Westmoreland Hospital, where two amputations were made on account of gangrene setting in.  His physical condition and age, however, were against him; he could not stand the shock.)

(Killed.  His spine was fractured by a fall of slate, in the Penn Manor No. 1 Mine.  He was hospitalized 1 month and 13 days prior to his death.  Died June 13, 1914, due to toxemia from the accident.);
(He is buried in Hillview Cemetery, Greeensburg, PA.);

Skurniski, Joseph
(Polish Miner, Coal Loader ca.1914, Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 25, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slateat the face of a room while shoveling coal, in the Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, June 8, 1914.  Died while being taken to the hospital.  His partner failed to get posts under the slate.)
Stihofski, William
(Polish Miner, Machine Scraper ca.1914, Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 30, married, 1 child.);
(Killed. Fatally injured by being caught by a mining machine at the face of a room.  He could not set the front jack on the machine and put in a pinch bar between the machine and a rib as a side brace.  When the machine started the bar slipped out and the machine swung around and caught him, in the Penn Manor No. 1 Mine, July 30, 1914.  Died the same day.)
