A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Pandora Shaft  Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Pandora Shaft Mine, Pandora, Loyalhanna, Derry Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Foot crushed by fall of coal at the face of a pillar, in the Pandora Mine, Oct. 2, 1909)

Cacini, Antonia
(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Pandora Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 22, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Pandora Mine, Dec. 27, 1901.  He had just fired a shot and was returning to fire another when the slate fell and crushed him.)
Caseltina, Joe
(Italian Miner, ca.1907, Pandora Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 40, married, 4 children.);
(The third mine fatality to occur in the immediate community within two days, took place in the mine of the Loyalhanna Coal & Coke Company, when Joe Caseltina, an Italian, living in house No. 47, Loyalhanna, was caught beneath a fall of loose slate while engaged in drawing ribs, and was so badly injured that he died within an hour after being ammitted to the Westmoreland Hospital.  He was horribly crushed, both legs having been broken, his skull fracturedm and internal injuries received, which caused his death.  The miner was about forty years of age and had been in this country for some time past.  He is surrived by a widow and four children.  Two of the children are in Loyalhanna, while the other two are visiting in Italy, and it will be weeks before they are informated of the sad death of their father.  The remains will be brought here for burial.
