Pandora Shaft Mine (ca.1894-1914),
Located on the Mainline of the Pennsylvania R.R., Pandora Station,  Village of Pandora, on the Latrobe-Derry Road, east of the Village of Loyalhanna, east of Latrobe, Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA
Owners: (ca.1894-1914) Loyalhanna Coal & Coke Company, Philadelphia, PA

HISTORY:
In 1894 the Loyalhanna Coal & Coke Company, a Philadelphia-based company opened the Pandora Shaft Mine, just east of it's Loyalhanna No. 1 Mine & Coke Works.  The new mine was located along the Pennsylvania Railroad Mainline.  The coal company also built a number of company houses in the new Village of Pandora for it's miners.

In 1910 the Pandora mine employed 128 miners and that year produced over 55,000 tons of coal.  Most of the coal extracted at the company's mines was shipped to market and sold as steam coal.

It is assumed that the miners at Pandora Shaft Mine used the Loyalhanna Coal & Coke Company Store in the Village of Loyalhanna, a short distance away.

The Villages of Loyalhanna and Pandora were served by the Latrobe-Derry Trolley Line, of the Westmoreland County Railways Company, whose trolley line ran along the Latrobe-Derry Road. This trolley line operated from 1902 until 1933.

By 1910 the Loyalhanna Coal & Coke Company was operating four mines, the three in the Latrobe area and a fourth at Onnalinda, in Cambria County.

The Loyalhanna Coal & Coke Company abandoned the Pandora Mine ca.1914.
