A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Ocean No. 1 Mine PCC


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Scott's Mine, Ocean No. 1 Mine (Pittsburg Coal Company), Scott Haven, Westmoreland Co., PA, of the Pittsburgh Coal Company.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Ocean No. 1 Mine PCC, Jan. 28, 1905.);
(January 28, Chesta Bonskie, loader, was instantly killed in Ocean No. 1 Mine (Pittsburg Coal Company), by a fall of slate.  He had drilled a hole in the slate for the purpose of blasting it down, and while tamping in the charge the slate fell upon him.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Ocean No. 1 Mine PCC, Westmoreland Co., PA, July 18, 1898.);
(John Frakovsky, Polish, miner, was instantly killed by a fall of slate July 18, 1898, at Ocean No. 1 Mine.  This accident was caused by carelessness on the part of the deceased, because if he had put up a post he would not have lost his life. It was the last wagon of coal on machine cut cut to load, and they were working to load it and valued it more than their lives, as his partner told him it needed a post, but he said it was hard enough to get down without putting a post under it, and he worked under it until it fell on him.  He had worked in this seam about six weeks, having come from the anthracite region, where he had worked about six years.  He leaves a wife and four children.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly.  It seems that the engine had run off, and Holmes was making an effort to shut the steam off the engine when the fly-wheel burst and struck him.  Outside the Ocean No. 1 Mine PCC, Sept. 16, 1910.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Ocean No. 1 Mine PCC, June 10, 1903.  He died shortly after the accident.  There was an unseen slip in the slate, and he was undercutting his coal when the slate came down on him.  If he had used a little more care in posting, the accident might have been avoided.)
