A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the Ocean No. 1 Mine
(Herminie No. 1 Mine)


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Ocean No. 1 Mine, [Herminie Mine; Herminie No. 1 Mine], Ocean Coal Company, Herminie, Sewickley Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.  The miners names have been complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of miners submitted by various people.

There were two different Ocean No. 1 Mines; the Ocean No. 1 Mine in Herminie, Sewickley Twp., Westmoreland Co. was operated by the Ocean Coal Company [OCC], the other Ocean No. 1 Mine, Scott Haven, Westmoreland Co., was operated by the Pittsburgh Coal Company [PCC].


The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

They had no posts under the slate and were evidently trying to load out the cut of coal without setting any posts. About twelve posts were lying in their room.)

Killed instantly by coming in contact with an electric wire (500 volts) while trying to get off the empty trip on the main haulage road, in the Ocean No. 1 Mine OCC, Sept. 11, 1907.  The men are hauled into the mine each morning.  On the above date the trip was stopped before it reached the parting where they should get off, and they all got off.  Deimeter thoughtlessly attempted to get off on the side the trolley wire is placed.)

However, after the accident only three posts were found under the slate, showing that he had removed one for the purpose of securing more ease in loading his coal.)

Giron, Joseph
(Miner, June 8, 1895, 2nd District, Ocean #1 Shaft Colliery, Westmoreland County. Was fatally injured by a fall of slate as he was driving a wedge in the coal. He tried to get away but was struck on the head and his skull was fractured. The back of his head was also bruised when he fell on the floor. He was taken to West Penn Hospital and died there six days after the accident. Age 19, single.)
