In the Summer of 1902 the Greensburg-based Keystone Coal and Coke Company was formed with the merger of a number of small coal companies in Westmoreland County.

These companies included several that were led by A.D. Harmon (the Hempfield Coal Company, Greensburg, PA; the Salem Coal Company, Greensburg, PA; The Greensburg Coal Company, Greensburg, PA and the Carbon Coal Company, Greensburg, PA), one that was headed by J. Howard Patton (the Claridge Gas Coal Company, Greensburg, PA), and three that were directed by Harry F. Bovard (the Sewickley Gas Coal Company, Greensburg, PA; the Arona Gas Coal Company, Greensburg, PA, and the Madison Gas Coal Company, Greensburg, PA).

The leaders of these coal companies all resided in Greensburg.  Harry F. Bovard, who was born in Jacktown in 1871 and began his career in the coal business as a clerk for the Madison Gas Coal Company, was appointed the Keystone Coal and Coke Company general superintendent.  Jilian B. Huff, a prominent Greensburg business, served as the first president of Keystone Coal and Coke Company, Greensburg, PA.
