A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the Larimer Mines
Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Larimer Mines, Larimer, North Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(On July 28, Antonio Basso, Italian, Machine Loader, was instantly killed in the Larimer Mine by a fall of slate.  The piece of slate was on the side of the room and had two posts under it, but it had an unseen slip running along just inside the edge of the coal the full length of the slate.  He had been told the day before to take it down.)

Breitvec, Adam
(Austrian Miner, Machine Loader ca.1903, Larimer Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 29, single);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by electric shock, in Larimer Mine, Dec. 4, 1903.  He was riding in an empty trip of cars when one jumped the track.  He got out to assist the driver in putting it on the track again, and in some way tripped and stumbled across to the opposite side of the entry where the wires were, containinmg 500 volts.  His hand came in contact with them and he could not release himself.  The driver put his brake rope around him and pulled him off, but it was too late.  He was out of his section of the mine, and on the driver's trip, where he had no business.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being forced against a brake wheel of a railroad car.  He was on a railroad car under the tipple and another car was dropped against the one he was on.  Another railroad car run into the one he was on.  He was at the brake wheel, and the jar brought him against the wheel with great force.  Outside the Larimer Mine, Jan. 11, 1905.  He died two days later.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Larmier Mine, July 18, 1898, while at work in his room.  After a careful examination of the place, we are of the opinion that he took all possible means to protect himself.  At the time of the accident it was supposed that he was trimming the "rib," as he was found near the same with pick in hand. Found the room in good condition, everything indicating that he was a good and careful miner.)

Weible, John
(American Miner, Electircal Engineer ca.1903, Larimer Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 20, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by an electric shock at switch-board, in the Larimer Mine, July 21, 1903.  At this mine the power house is located in the mine, and power from an alternating current of 4,000 volts is used to run the generators, making 500 volts for use in the mine.  Weible was at the switch-board of the alternating current, cutting out the contact switches, he having failed to build up the power the first time.  He got his hand below the insulation on the levers, and caused a short circuit through his body.  He was young at the business and did not use enough precaution.)
