Cole, Lawrence

(Lawrence Cole was listed in several accounts as being killing in the Kinlock Mine Disaster of 1929, but was not killed.
A copy of a newspaper article from the Valley Daily News, Tarentum, PA that lists those killed in the Kinlock Mine Explosion on March 21, 1929. Lawrence Cole is listed but my great uncle, Harry Hertzog, is not.
Knowing that Lawrence Cole, husband of my great aunt Mollie Hertzog Cole, did not die in that explosion but died in 1965 in Michigan, I wrote off to my elderly aunt who was living with the Cole family the day of the explosion. (She witnessed the debris falling from above) I asked why she thought Uncle Lawrence was listed in the newspaper as a victim but Uncle Harry was not.
She wrote me back:
Now I'm going to tell you why they got Uncle Lawrence and Uncle Harry mixed up. I can't remember why but, Aunt Frances [wife of Harry Hertzog] once said that Uncle Harry and Uncle Lawrence changed jobs that morning and Uncle Harry was running Lawrence's loading machine called a cutter. It cut the coal and loaded it on cars so that's why the mix up in the names. Uncle Lawrence's dad and family all lived in Brownsville, on Cole Hill. When Uncle Harry was laid out at home, Brownsville, at his dads, some men, two of them, came and looked at Uncle Harry in his casket. One of them lifted Uncle Harry's right hand and said "that's the hand that caused the mine to blow up." His hand was burnt. It was a spark from his machine that caused the explosion. I don't know why that was never cleared up. I guess it was never told that they had the wrong name on the death list.)
