A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Walston Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Walston Mines, Walston, Jefferson Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Stenger, Adam
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1903, Walton No. 1 Mine, Jefferson Co., PA, Age 60, married.);
(Killed.  On February 27, 1903, Adam Stenger met with an accident caused by miners working in a parallel mine. The miners put off their blast of powder without warning him. The shot tore a hole through the wall and struck him with terrific force, cutting his face and body and causing internal injuries. He died the next day, Saturday, February 28, 1903. Interrment in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney, Pa. Mr. Stenger was one of four coal miners who were first to strike pick for the R & P.C.& I. Company, having made the opening at No. 1 Walston Mines.)
