A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Florence Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Florence Mines & Coke Works, Florence, McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Foot and back bruised by a fall of draw slate, in the Florence No. 2 Mine, July 19, 1905.)
Cherk, Henry
(Italian Miner Boy, Trip Runner ca.1905, Florence No. 1 Mine, Jefferson Co., PA, Age 16, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars, in the Florence No. 1 Mine, Nov. 21, 1905.  He was trying to couple the mine cars of a loaded trip and was squeezed.  He died two days after the accident.  No one thought the boy was seriously injured,  as he walked home after the accident.)

(Injured.  Body squeezed, caught between a mine car and the mule, in the Florence No. 1 Mine, Jan. 22, 1906.  Due to carelessness.)
Fostino, John
(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Florence No. 1 Mine, Jefferson Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Killed.  Killed by mine cars.  He had pushed an empty mine car on the room parting but not far enough for the loaded cars droped down the heading to pass, and when his buddy dropped two loaded mine cars down the heading they caught the empty mine car and Fostino was crushed between the mine car and a pillar.  Accident was unavoidable, as he supposed the mine car was clear of the track, in the Florence No. 1 Mine, March 20., 1906.)

(Injured.  Leg broken.  Motorman bumped into someloaded mine cars on the heading and one ran back to the face, which was a little down grade, and broke his leg, in the Florence No. 1 Mine, Nov. 14, 1906.  Accident was due to carelessness.)

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate, in the Florence No. 1 Mine, Dec. 28, 1904.  Due to carelessness as he failed to prop the slate.)
Sucket, Antony

(Injured.  Leg broken.  The Motor struck the switch rail, which flew up and struck him, in the Florence No. 1 Mine, Oct. 1, 1906.  Accident unavoidable.)
