A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the Irons Mines


Following is a partial listing of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Irons Mine, Rostraver Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Leg broken.  Struck by flying blasting cap piece at face of room, in the Irons Mine, Sept. 9, 1910.)
Baozoskey, John
(Hungarian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Irons Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 48, married, 1 child);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Irons Mine, Feb. 8, 1905,  while loading a mine car from the left side of room 34, entry 8 Right.  The slate is what is known as "Double Slate."  It was examined a few minutes before it fell, and was considered safe.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by being run over by a motor, near the mine entrance of New Hill, Iron Mine.  Outside the Irons Mine, May 27, 1905.  The motorman was moving a trip of six empty mine cars, and when near a parting, which divides the full from the empty track, Morrow applied the brake without shutting off the power, which caused the rear end of the motor to leave the track throwing Morrow infront of the motor.)
