A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Snyder Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Snyder Mines, Snyder / Coy, Center Twp., Indiana Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Hand injured.  He cut his hand with an acetylene lamp and wound became infected, in the Snyder No. 3 Mine, March 4, 1916.)

(Injured.  Sternum fractured between a mine car and the mine roof while riding on top of a mine car coming out of a room, in the Snyder No. 1 Mine, April 18, 1917.)

(Slavonian Miner, ca.1915, Snyder No. 3 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 39, single.);
(Injured. Knee dislocated. Fell while pushing a mine car into a room, in the Snyder No. 3 Mine, November 23, 1915.)

(American Miner, Scraper ca.1916, Snyder No. 1 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 22, married.);
(Injured.  Foot lacerated by the wheel of a mining machine running over it on an entry, in the Snyder No. 1 Mine, March 29, 1916.)
Crook, Mike
(Austrian Miner, Machine Scraper ca.1918, Snyder No. 2 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 33, married.);
(Injured. Three toes cut off when coal cutting machine ran over his foot on entry, in the Snyder No. 2 Mine, March 8, 1918.)
