Homer City -
Work is soon to be started on the erection of a number of houses for the Meco Coal Company.  These dwellings are to be modern and convenient.

(General Superintendent W. J. Jones Superintendent; E. W. Hoffman, Superintendent ca.1916.)
[from "Coal Age," Vol. X, July 1 - Dec. 31, 1916, New York, NY.]

J. Blair Kennerly, of Philadelphia, has consummated a deal for the purchase of the entire plant and holdings of the Meco Coal Company, one and a half miles from Homer City, along Yellow Creek.  The consideration is about $100,000.

The Meco Coal Company controlled 1,000 acres of Miller coal and about 600 acres of E seam coal.  The plant has been in operation about two years and is considered one of the best in the county.  Mr. Kennerly recently took over the Wentz Smokless Coal Company's plant near Hoslsopple.

ACCIDENT AT MECO MINES
By the breaking away of a number of loaded cars from a trip in the Meco Mines yesterday about 11 o'clock, J. F. Jones, a motorman, was seriously injured and the extent of injuries will not be fully known until Dr. W. D. Gates, company physicion makes an examination today with an X-ray.  Motorman Jones had entered the mine with a trip of empty cars and was unaware of the run-away until overwhelmed with coal and dug out from the debris in an unconscious condition.  As the impact of the two moving trips in opposite directions was something terrific, a miner on the empty trip on the seventeenth car from the motor, was thrown clear of the car by the force of the collision, Jack Jones, the injured man, is well known and his many friends will be pleased to know of his speedy recovery.

Fire Destroyed Wooden Tipple At Meco Mines

Flames of Unknown Origin Broke Out at Noon Yesterday and Caused Loss Estimated at $6,000.

AID FROM TOWN

Fire, the origin of which is not known, totally destroyed the wooden tipple and trestle supporting the tracks, at the Meco mine, five miles southeast of town, owned and operated by M. Bennett and Sons Construction Company, shortly after noon yesterday.

At lunch time several employes of the mine, lunched on the tipple.  A short time after they returned to work, the tipple caught fire and within a few minutes it was a mass of flames.  When the employes could make no headway fighting the fire, the Indiana Fire Department was called.  When they arrived at the scene, the tipple and trestle had been destroyed, but the local company was able to save the reserve tipple located a short distance away and extinguish the fire which caught in coal and coal dust under the tipple.  The damage is estimated at $6,000.

The mines at Meco are among the present active coal operations in the county, and are operated six days a week, with an average daily production of over 600 tons.  The mine will continue to operate and the coal will be dumped over the reserve tipple.

Workmen started this morning to clean up the debris and within a short period of time a new tipple will replace the old structure.
