ACCIDENT AT MECO MINES
1922
1929 Fire Destroyed Wooden Tipple At Meco Mines Flames of Unknown Origin Broke Out at Noon Yesterday and Caused Loss Estimated at $6,000. AID FROM TOWN Fire, the origin of which is not known, totally destroyed the wooden tipple and trestle supporting the tracks, at the Meco mine, five miles southeast of town, owned and operated by M. Bennett and Sons Construction Company, shortly after noon yesterday. At lunch time several employes of the mine, lunched on the tipple. A short time after they returned to work, the tipple caught fire and within a few minutes it was a mass of flames. When the employes could make no headway fighting the fire, the Indiana Fire Department was called. When they arrived at the scene, the tipple and trestle had been destroyed, but the local company was able to save the reserve tipple located a short distance away and extinguish the fire which caught in coal and coal dust under the tipple. The damage is estimated at $6,000. The mines at Meco are among the present active coal operations in the county, and are operated six days a week, with an average daily production of over 600 tons. The mine will continue to operate and the coal will be dumped over the reserve tipple.
Workmen started this morning to clean up the debris and within
a short period of time a new tipple will replace the old structure.
