HISTORY:
Juneau No. 1 Mine - A new mine opened in the Upper Freeport Coal Seam on the two-entry system. The mine is reached by 950 feet of railroad siding off the Indiana Branch of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittburgh Railway.  The siding is laid with 75 pound rail and first-class ties balasted and cindered. The Juneau No. 1 Mine is equipped with modern tipple, scales and chutes. Coal is hoisted to the tipple from the surface by a short engine plane.  Mine rolling stock consists of sixty 2 ton mine cars equipped with Phillips patent trucks of 42 inch gauge.  Much progress has been made in the development of the mine. About 5000 feet of heading have been driven, and 70 ton new track rails have been laid and 30 ton are in stock.  The mine is ventilated by a 5 foot Stine fan operated on the exhaust system.  The fan is located at the top of a 30 foot shaft, which is also used as a traveling shaft in addition to the main opening.  The boiler house 30 by 40 feet has been completed, in which has been installed a 150 H.P. boiler to be used in connection with compressor, hoist and fan.

Outside:  Built one office building 10 x 14 feet, one blacksmith shop 16 by 24 feet, and one mule barn 41 by 56 feet.  Eleven head of stock are used in the operation of the plant.

Five water wells have been drilled, cased and equipped with lift pumps.  Built 2 ten-room blocks, 3 four-room houses, 3 two-room houses, 1 three-room house and 1 barracks consisting of 3 four-room apartments and 1 nine-room apartment.
