From Helen Johns Linker we have this interesting story about the Coal & Iron Police in Heilwood:
My grandparents, Harry and Effie Johns lived in Heilwood when
my father was born at the Heilwood hospital. [his name was Harry also].
My uncle came up from Johnstown on the train to see the new baby.
He was my grandfather's brother. Anyway, the coal & iron
police wouldn't let him off of the train, because they thought he was there
to organize the union for the miners. My grandfather had to go to the train
station to verify that he was indeed there to see the new baby and was not
there to organize the miners. This was in 1926, I believe. Coolidge was still
in the White House, I believe. |
Today's old photograph of a 1926 first-aid meeting in Heilwood was submitted by Jim Farabaugh, whose father owned the photo. Notice the people in the front row either are holding or have in front of them new first-aid certifications. Tennis courts are shown in the background on the right of the picture and the company houses can be seen on the left. |
