A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Glenwood Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Glenwood Mines, Glen Campbell, Indiana Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Bomba, George
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1895, Glenwood No. 4 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 30, married, 1 child.);
(Killed. He with another miner was engaged in drawing back a pillar and the roof commenced to break down, and he was struck by a rock, killing him instantly, in the Glenwood No. 4 Mine, October 28, 1895. He was warned by his fellow workmen to come out, but would not heed their warnings, as he thought he was safe.)
Brady, James
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, Glenwood No. 4 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 24, married, 2 Children.);
(Killed.  While at work undermining a fall of coal.  It fell upon him from a clay slip that could not be seen at the time, in the Glenwood No. 4 Mine, Sept. 16, 1898.)

(Injured. Bruised by a piece of draw slate at the face of a room, in the Glenwood No. 6½ Mine, November 22, 1910.)

(American Miner, ca.1909, Glenwood No. 11 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 20, single.);
(Killed. Fatally burned by the explosion of a can of powder, in the Glenwood No. 11 Mine, April 9, 1909.)
Crokopic, Frank

(Injured. Back bruised by a fall of rock while putting up a cross bar on a heading, in the Glenwood No. 6½ Mine, April 19, 1911.)

(Injured.  Ankle injured.  Squeezed between a mine car and a pillar, in the Glenwood No. 9 Mine, March 14, 1906.  Accident due to carelessness on his part.)
Dunn, Oscar J.
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Glenwood No. 9 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Killed.  Injured fatally by a fall of mine roof, in the Glenwood No. 9 Mine, Aug. 25, 1905. He was working in a heading, and while his butty was wedging down some roof a large piece of slate fell from between two slips upon Dunn.  He died August 31, 1905.)

(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1897, Glenwood Mines, Indiana Co., PA, Age 28, married, 2 children.);
(Killed. A piece of slate about 12 feet in length fell upon him, killing him, in a Glenwood Mine, September 10, 1897. With Harvey O’Hara.)

Palina, Dem
(Hungarian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1902, Glenwood No. 11 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 30, married, 4 children.);
(Killed. Killed by mine car in Glenwood No. 11 Mine, November 11, 1902; As the mine is such a long distance from the tipple, the mine foreman had been in the habit of giving the miners an empty car so they could ride down the tramroad and through the tunnel to the tipple. This man and some companions were given a good car to take down to the tipple, over a mile away, but as it did not run fast enough to suit them, they changed it for another one at the mouth of the tunnel, and this car had a defective brake, and in going through the tunnel the car got beyond their control, and all the men got out safely but Polina was caught between the car and the roof when the car jumped the track, and he died in a few hours; the men were to blame for this accident, for if they had used the car they started out with they would have been all right and safe.);
